‘Powerless’: ‘Wayne Or Lose’ Series Premiere Review

Powerless

Powerless

Tonight marks the series premiere of NBC’s Powerless, the first ever comedy series set in the DC universe (a separate universe to the DCEU or Arrowverse). While all of television — network, cable and streaming — is flooded right now with all manner of comic book-based TV shows, there is currently nothing out there quite like Powerless. With a talented comedic cast and over 75 years of DC comics history for them to pull from, how could this new series possibly go wrong?

The series premiere, “Wayne or Lose,” begins with Emily Locke (Vanessa Hudgens) on the subway, on her way to her first day of work at Wayne Securities. While in transit, her train is derailed by a fight between Crimson Fox (Atlin Mitchell) and Jack-O-Lantern. She comes close to meeting her own demise, but when the dust settles, Emily still has a smile on her face. It’s all exciting and new for her, but the other passengers aren’t impressed. As it turns out, this is just another day in Charm City.

At Wayne Securities, Emily meets her new boss, Van Wayne (Alan Tudyk), cousin of Bruce Wayne. Van informs her that her job is to whip the team into shape, then he pretends he has a call to answer from his famous cousin. This leaves his assistant Jackie (Christina Kirk) to introduce Emily to her new team, consisting of Cheif Design Officer Teddy (Danny Pudi), Lead Software Engineer Wendy (Jennie Pierson) and Head of Engineering and “chief of child-like wonder” Ron (Ron Funches). Almost as soon as Emily’s new job begins, an actual phone call from Bruce Wayne puts everyone’s job on the line.

There’s a lot to talk about in this series premiere, so hit the next button below to follow along as we break down the highlights and critical moments of “Wayne or Lose.”
