‘Westworld’ 1.03 “The Stray” Review: Mistakes Pile-Up Inside The Park

You’d be hard-pressed to describe the first two hours of Westworld as fast-paced television, but the third episode slowed it down further for some necessary exposition and set up.

As long-form stories on TV become more novelistic and binge-tastic, seasons are most consistently made of acts than individual episodes. Even the most glowing reviews of the four episodes HBO made available for preview noted the logistics of putting together Westworld together was extensive, in particular due to the loops the hosts live on making for several scenes to repeat or go on with little variation. This episode saw a lot of that, to varying effect. It continued to pull back the curtain on the mythology of the show while preparing us – and the hosts – for the violent ends to come.
