’Gotham’: ‘The Primal Riddle’ Review

Gotham 317

Gotham 317Gotham opens up with Penguin and Ivy walking through a snow storm somewhere far away from the city as they enter a building where Mr. Freeze is being kept at. Freeze jumps on Oswald who offers to help him reverse his condition if Freeze helps him. Oswald and Ivy reveal that they got his suit so he can leave with them as he agrees to help them. Ivy and Oswald turn to Firefly next as they try to convince him to join the army of freaks. Firefly agrees to join them, but decides to kill her nasty boss first before leaving.

Back in Gotham City, Gordon and Kathryn are having a chat at the Court of Owls’ hideout as she tries to figure out if James is on their side. She wants James to prove his loyalty to the Court and informs him that she will reach out to him when he is being tested. Back at GCPD, Leslie tells Bullock that his uncle is dead as James show up. They don’t know that he killed his own uncle as James pretends to not know about it. Leslie gets suspicious for his lack of reaction, but Bullock tells her to back off. When she leaves, Bullock asks what James is hiding and learns that Frank shot himself so he could get his nephew into the Court. James explains that Kathryn still wants to test him to see if he is truly loyal to the Court.

Alfred and Bizarro-Bruce are playing chess at the Wayne Manor as the butler beats him. He points out that something is different about Bruce and thinks it is because of Selina. Bruce admits that things didn’t work out when he tries to heal their relationship. When Alfred leaves to make dinner, the clone notices his nose bleeding and has no idea what is the cause of it. He calls Kathryn and tells him that “it’s happening again”. He returns to the Court and gets checked up on as he asks Kathryn if he is dying and she confirms that he is indeed dying. Kathryn asks if he has gotten attached to anyone when Bizarro-Bruce asks if people will die by the time the real Bruce comes back. He assures Kathryn that he is OK with the plan.

Barbara goes to see Nygma as he presents himself to her as The Riddler. She asks Nygma if Oswald ever told him anything about the Court of Owls when he was still working for the mayor. Nygma asks Barbara how she knows about it and she tells him how she helped James as well as what went down at the docks. Nygma tells her about what Hugo Strange teased to him when he was at Indian Hill as he agrees to help her find out what the mystery weapon is. Riddler crashes a play as he addresses the audience that the Ridlder is coming before killing the actor on stage. Bullock and James show up later at the crime scene as they try to figure out what Nygma is playing at. One of the detectives shows them that he left a box behind, featuring a scroll with a riddle inside of it. They head to see Mayor James to get to somewhere safe, but the mayor doesn’t see it as necessary. However, the mayor starts feeling ill as he notices that Riddler fiddled with his food. They take him to the hospital, but Nygma starts talking through the speakers as James tries to find him. However, Nygma was never there as the microphone was standing next to a phone on speaker.

Gordon calls Bullock and tells him that Nygma was never there. Suddenly, a gang shows up and a big fight erupts while Nygma, disguised as a cop, goes after Mayor James. Gordon shows up only to find that the mayor is already gone. Gordon heads to the Sirens club and asks Tabitha where Barbara is. Gordon asks her and Butch to tell him where Barbara and Nygma are at, but they don’t know. Bullock calls Gordon to tell him that Nygma has left another riddle.  Butch asks Tabitha why they didn’t give Nygma up, but she doesn’t want to betray Barbara.

Elsewhere, Nygma and Barbara are torturing information out of Mayor James as they try to learn more about the Court and their weapon. The mayor eventually admits that he knows about them, but has never actually met the Court. Nygma thanks him for the mayor’s collaboration, while Barbara wonders how that information was helpful. Nygma explains how they have the power to get the Court’s attention, while Tabitha arrives to tell Barbara that Gordon knows what is going on. Back at the station, Leslie confronts Gordon as she found out during Frank’s autopsy that someone took out the bullet that killed his uncle and put in a different one instead.

Gordon tries to walk away, but she gets angry and tells him that she will find out what he is keeping from her. Bullock arrives to give Gordon the new riddle and he turns on the news as they witness Riddler broadcasting with the mayor who has a bomb around his neck. Kathryn calls Gordon and asks him to get Nygma out of the equation in order to prevent Riddler from exposing them. Gordon tries to reason with her that a cop killer belongs in jail, but Kathryn makes it clear that unless he kills Nygma, they are done with each other. The mayor tries to reason with Nygma to stop this as they are both now in trouble by the Court. Gordon calls the Riddler and tells him to show up at GCPD as he will tell him who is really ruling Gotham. Nygma agrees to see him alone at the station, but brings the mayor with him. Gordon tells him that it was a trap and doesn’t take Nygma’s bomb threat seriously. Nygma tries to detonate the bomb, but Gordon reveals that his bomb is being jammed with as Tabitha told him how to stop it.

Nygma demands he tells him who the Court is as Gordon hands him a key, but only if the mayor gets to walk away. But Riddler won’t fall for it and gets ready to shoot the mayor, but agrees to go with Gordon. Gordon takes Nygma to the docks as a car pulls up to join them and Kathryn walks out of it. Nygma gets out of Gordon’s car to go and speak with her as he questions if Kathryn really is the Court of Owls. Kathryn assures him that Gordon had to be convinced to bring Nygma to her. She invites Nygma into her car to get all the answers that he is seeking for. Nygma accepts her invitation as Kathryn goes over to Gordon to thank him for proving his loyalty to the Court.

Selina gets visited by Bizarro-Bruce as he wanted to see her again, but she gets angry that he disrespected her wishes. She notices that something is wrong with him and tries to get away from Bruce. The clone admits to her that he isn’t the real Bruce Wayne. He tells her the whole story of how the Court of Owls found him and that Selina needs to leave the city as soon as possible. Selina asks him where the real Bruce is and finds out that he is far away from Gotham City. She tries to leave, but he won’t let her as no one can find out the secret. Selina gets annoyed and starts to emotionally hurt him before the clone pushes Selina out of a window as she falls several stories to the ground. Later on, several cats approach her lifeless body.

Barbara shows up at the club as she is furious with Tabitha for betraying her before taking off again. Meanwhile, Oswald, Ivy, and Firefly return to Penguin’s home where Freeze is waiting as he and Firefly didn’t know that they would be working together. Oswald notices that Nygma has been staying there. He gets filled with rage before Ivy tells Oswald to check out the news where they are talking about The Riddler being on the run. The episode ends with Gordon entering a room with all the Court members as Kathryn welcomes him as their newest member before he puts on an Owl mask.
