Supergirl kicks off with Maggie at the scene of an acting crime as she is trying to get through to the kidnappers as the Girl of Steel arrives and puts an end to the hostage situation. However, Maggie is slightly annoyed that Maggie interfered as she was hoping to end the situation on her own. Back at Kara’s place, Kara, Mon-El, Maggie and Alex are having pizza night, but as the situation is brought up, Maggie and Kara disagree about Supergirl getting in the way for the police.
Kara storms out as Mon-El takes off too. Alex tries to calm Maggie down as she wants the two women to get along. Maggie is fine with Kara, but has more problems with Supergirl, as Alex takes off to calm Kara down. The next day at CatCo, Maggie visits Kara to ask if she has seen Alex and they both realize that neither of them has seen Alex since dinner last night. Kara suddenly gets a call from Alex’s phone, but it’s not her as it is a male voice who says that if they don’t break a criminal named Peter Thompson out of prison, Alex will die. Kara says she can’t just break people out like that, but the male voice says that he knows she can because he knows that Kara is Supergirl.
J’onn, Maggie and Kara head over to the prison where Peter Thompson is serving his time to find out who the kidnapper might be. He claims that he doesn’t know who it could be as J’onn reads his mind and Peter is telling the truth. Winn calls Kara and tells him that Peter has an illegitimate son who just happened to grow up in Kara and Alex’s hometown, Midvale. Kara heads over to the address from Winn and she finds Rick Malverne who reveals that he kidnapped Alex. He lets Kara talk to Alex through speakers for a short time before he shuts it off. Rick reminds her that it’s his father for Alex and Kara almost blasts him with her heat vision, but he warns her that if he dies, Kara will never find Alex who will die slowly.
Kara takes Rick to prison where Maggie and she interrogate him. Rick tells Kara how he learned about Kara’s abilities when they were both teenagers. He goes on to tell them about his bad relationship with his mother who would abuse Rick quite a lot. When Peter entered Rick’s life, he took care of his son and now Rick wants to save his father. Kara gets pissed off again and gets violent with him until Maggie breaks it up and takes her out of Rick’s cell. Once outside, Kara gets reminded by Maggie that Peter is the key to get Alex back. Later on, Peter is allowed to see his son, but Rick knows something is up. He has worked on this plan for a whole year, revealing that he is aware of the Martian Manhunter’s shape-shifting abilities as he knows that it’s J’onn that is standing in there. He goes back into his Hank shape and Rick warns them that time is ticking.
While that is going on, Alex is cutting something out of her skin, a piece of technology and somehow manages to update the IP address of her tracker, which Winn gets alerted about back at the D.E.O. He sends Kara the location as she flies over to save her sister. Unfortunately, Rick was one step ahead as Kara flew to a false location. All Kara finds is a computer, a timer and a message that says “now you have four”, as Kara only has four hours left to find Alex instead of sixteen. Alex’s cell starts getting filled by water. Back at the D.E.O., Kara confronts Rick once again, demanding to find out where Alex is. He gives her access to his computer so Kara can speak with her sister. Alex tells Kara to not let herself be blackmailed by a terrorist, before asking Kara to let Alex speak to Maggie in private. She tries to tell Maggie farewell, in case this is it for her, but Maggie refuses to hear it as she begs Alex to swear to her that she won’t give up. Once the connection dies, Maggie gets furious at Kara for rushing into a situation without thinking of the consequences.
Rhea gets closer to Lena as she tries to get Lena to collaborate on a new piece of technology that will be revolutionary for Earth. As Lena gets more intrigued, Rhea suggests they have dinner later that night to go over more details. During dinner, the two women bond as Rhea talks about her dear sun that she lost to a “bad girl”. Lena talks about her dynamic with her mother Lillian as Rhea shows sympathy for Lena. However, when Rhea says “thank the Gods I found you” when cheering for their new business relationship, Lena gets quite suspicious. The next day Lena gets visited by Rhea again and tells her that she wants to grant her elevator access so Rhea can visit Lena whenever she wants. Lena asks Rhea to just scan the device that can detect if you are alien or not (which Rhea doesn’t know about) and she gets her thumb scanned.
Lena calls Rhea out on the odd designs for Rhea’s technology, how there is one piece of element that doesn’t exist on Earth. Rhea realizes what her mistake at dinner and Lena refuses to help Rhea before she throws her out of the office. Later that day, Rhea shows up outside of Lena’s window and asks that she hear Rhea out. While she lied about being an alien, Rhea assures Lena that everything else she said was true. Rhea asks Lena to at least consider it and Lena agrees to think about it. She gives Kara a call to ask for advice, but Kara says that now is not a good time. Maggie decides to go and break Peter out of prison, as she is desperate to save Alex, but Kara shows up and stops Maggie. Kara lectures Peter and how he can save Alex by getting Rick to do the right thing. Peter tells Supergirl that the only place he can think of where Alex might be kept at.
As Alex’s cell is almost completely filled with water, Alex tries to break out, but almost runs out of air when Kara and Maggie show up in the last minute to save her. Alex wakes up at the D.E.O. medical bay with Maggie at her side. The two women declare their love for one another and how they want to live a beautiful life together. They leave the medical bay and finds out that J’onn is going to mind wipe Rick’s memory of knowing about Supergirl’s identity. Kara and Maggie have a heart to heart with one another as they put their differences behind. Kara gets called by Lena again who asks if she can have brunch with her next weekend and they make plans. However, something isn’t right as Lena turns to Rhea and asks if she is ready to change the world together as the episode cuts to the title logo.
